The traditional ‘renal’ diet has been overly restrictive, excluding foods that have healthful benefits (beyond treatment of renal disease) in the treatment of diabetes, heart disease and the prevention of cancer, to name a few comorbidities. The overly restrictive nature of the renal diet lends to high levels of patient dissatisfaction and difficulties in long-term adherence. There is emerging research indicating the benefit of plant-based foods in the treatment of chronic kidney disease and this will alter how we approach this population in provision of MNT. This session incorporates a review of the growing literature and how to integrate plant-based protein into the renal diet and potentially delay the progression of kidney disease.

AnnaMarie Rodriguez, RDN, LD, FAND
AnnaMarie has worked as a renal dietitian for over 20 years in a variety of settings from clinical to pharmaceutical including sales, education, and renal medical affairs. She is currently employed by Pentec Health as a Renal Clinical Case Manager and is an owner of Nutrition Directions LLC as an Independent Consultant. She has served and chaired a number of boards including the South and Central Texas National Kidney Foundation Medical Advisory Board, San Antonio Council of Renal Nutrition, Renal Practice Group DPG and Wisconsin Council of Renal Nutrition. Currently she is the Chair for Vegetarian DPG Speaker Bureau and the Wisconsin/Michigan State Coordinator for Vegetarian DPG, Member of the Plant-based Prevention of Disease Board of Directors. She is a Master Gardener and is focusing on her Master’s degree while working on several other certifications through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, in addition to peer reviewing and coauthoring additional projects related to renal and renal/plant-based nutrition ranging from nutrition support to CKD education materials. She has enjoyed presenting for peers since 2000 and in collaboration appreciates inspiration, change and diversity.
